World Press Photo 2014 in Kraków

For the 17th time Bunkier Sztuki (Contemporary Art Gallery in Kraków) is Hosting the world wide exhibition World Press Photo. Every year an independent international jury selects the best pictures in 9 different categories from countries all over the world. This year photographers, magazines and agencies form 132 countries delivered 98 671 photos to take part in the competition.

This year’s winner was John Stanmeyer whose picture shows African migrants on the shore of Djibouti city. Migrants are raising their phones at night in order to capture a signal from neighboring Somalia — the only link to relatives left abroad. The city is a common stop-off point for migrants on their way from such countries as Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, looking for a better life in Europe and the Middle East.

The gallery itself was created in 1965 and belongs to one of the most important modern art institutions in Poland. After visiting the exhibition how about a cup of coffee in the resteaurant next to it called Bunkier?
